Environmental Responsibility

Combating the climate crisis and pursuing environmental responsibility is an integral part of the Lotus Apparel Group production process. These are a few examples of the ways that we are trying to combat the environmental impacts of the fashion industry.

Forests

Why should we care about forests? For many reasons, including forests provide clean water, they clean the air we breathe, help wildlife thrive, reduce crime in cities, keep us healthy, and help us combat climate change. Unfortunately, fashion’s impact on forests comes mainly from the production of textiles.

We are making a difference by using forest friendly fabrics in our production process. Eliminating controversial fibers including Viscose, Rayon, Modal and Lyocell are important. As well as increasing forest-friendly alternative fabrics like Hemp, Ramie, Jute, Linen, Organic Cotton, Bamboo, Recycled Polyester, and Soy. You can help as a consumer by choosing these fabrics when making purchases.

Water

The fashion industry is a major water consumer and sustainable fashion is the solution.

Some ways to reduce water consumption is to source materials from sustainable farms that subscribe to earth-friendly processes. It is also important to reduce the amount of wasted materials in the production process of the fabric cutting. Dyeing fabrics is notoriously bad for the water supply if the fabric dyers are dumping and polluting the waterway. So, it is important to know for sure that they are adhere to strict dyeing policies. We must research fewer damaging formulations for textile dyes as well as use fewer chemicals in the garment finishing process. It is also important to choose raw materials that require less water to grow in the production process.

Air

The fashion industry makes a sizable contribution to climate change and is responsible for 10% of humanity’s carbon emissions. Why are carbon emissions bad for the air? Because  carbon emissions cause climate change. Climate change is responsible for extreme weather events like tropical storms, wildfires, severe droughts and heat waves, negatively affecting crop production, causing disruption to animals’ natural habitats, and more. So, what can the fashion industry do about it? It is also important to identify decarbonizing material production and processing, minimizing production and manufacturing waste, and decarbonizing garment manufacturing. Reducing emissions from operations and improve material mix, increase use of sustainable transport, improve packaging with recyclables. What can consumers do about it? Purchase more expensive, better-quality, and non-synthetic clothing and use them for a longer period of time.
